Colonel Harlan David Sanders was born on September 9, 1890

In 1906 he falsified his date of birth and joined the United States Army, spending 3 months as a Teamster in Cuba

Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge, he persevered through a multitude of various jobs:
– Blacksmith’s Helper for the Southern Railroad
– Cleaning out ash pans of trains for the Northern Alabama Railroad
– Fireman, by the time he was 16
– Labor work with the Norfolk and Western Railroads
– Fireman on the Illinois Central Railroad, during which time he studied Law through night-study courses
– Rock Island Railroad
– Practiced Law in Little Rock, Arkansas (this career ended when he got into a courtroom brawl with his own client)
– Laborer on the Pennsylvania Railroad
– Life insurance salesman for the Prudential Life Insurance Company in 1916 (eventually fired for insubordination)
– Life insurance salesman with Mutual Benefit Life of New Jersey
– Established a successful Ferry Boat company on the Ohio River in 1920
– Secretary at the Columbus, Indiana Chamber of Commerce in 1922

– Also in 1922, cashed in his Ferry Boat company shares for $22,000 – which he then used to invest in a company that manufactured acetylene lamps (which was subsequently run out of business by the creation of the Delco electric lamp)

– Salesman for the Michelin Tire company (lost that job in 1924, when Michelin closed their New Jersey plant)

– Coincidentally in 1924, the Colonel met the general manager of Standard Oil of Kentucky, who asked him to run a service station (this station closed in 1930, due to the Great Depression)

– Service station General Manager for Shell Oil in 1930 (this is when and where he began cooking chicken and serving it to customers in his adjacent living quarters)
– Commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1935 by then-Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon

He acquired a motel in Asheville, North Carolina in July, 1939 that was destroyed by fire in November, 1939 – he had it re-built as a motel with a 140-seat restaurant (this is where, in 1940, he finally perfected HIS “Kentucky Fried” recipe)

World War II broke out, so gas was rationed – this caused the tourist industry to dry up, forcing the Colonel to close his motel and restaurant
– Restaurant Supervisor in Seattle restaurant until the latter part of 1942
– Ran cafeterias for the government at an Ordinance Works in Tennessee
– Assistant Manager at a cafeteria in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
– Re-Commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1949 by his friend, Governor Lawrence Wetherby
– Franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken for the first time in 1952, to a south Salt Lake, Utah restaurant owner

In 1955 (when he was 65), a new interstate greatly reduced the tourist traffic that once frequented the Colonel’s hotel and restaurant, so he sold it and hit the road to recruit additional franchisees

By 1964, Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises throughout the USA and Canada numbered over 600…feeling overwhelmed by this success, the Colonel sold his entire operation to a Kentucky businessmen partnership of 3 men, for (a mere) $2 million
